There are currently 20 World Heritage sites endorsed by UNESCO in Japan. 16 of them are designated as being World “Cultural” Heritage and 4 as World “Natural” Heritage. Among them the city of Kyoto is unarguably the best known Cultural Heritage site. The entire city, its historical temples and shrines, local life and festivities are all designated to be conserved. So is the buddhism culture centered around Houryuji Temple in Nara. Kumano-ko-do is a route of old roads for buddhism pilgrims from ancient times. It is also, even though just a collection of roads, designated as Cultural Heritage.
For the other Cultural Heritage sites, Himeji-jo castle, Itsukushima-jinja shrine and Nikko Tousho-gu shrine are all spectacular destinations for any tourists. As for Natural Heritage sites, Yakushima island, Shirakami-sanchi region and Ogasawara islands are among the best.
Visiting those sites is your gateway to Japan’s over 2,600 year history and spiritual traditions. They are a bit mystified, and always fascinate you whenever you try to experience them.
