The Castle of Japan

There are two types of castles in Japan. Yamajiro, the castle designated as a defensive fort and optimized for warfare, and Hirayamajiro or Hirajiro, the castle as a symbol of power and control by a feudal lord.

Ancient Yamajiro was built in the steep mountains by a warlord and used as the fortress.  After the age of wars In the medieval era ended, castles began appearing in hills and lowlands as peace prevailed the country, eventually replacing ancient Yamajiro with more modern Hirayamajiro. There are few existing Yamajiro left in Japan.
